Depression isn't always easy to recognize. And hardly ever is the person that suffers from depression the one that comes up with the right conclusions. Therefore it is important to know the signs of depression if you think somebody close to you is a victim. The most obvious sign of depression is the one that proves that someone changed the way he or she views him or her selves. There should be red flags all over the place if he or she tells you that he or she is lacking energy. Be alert when they point out all of their physical burdens to you at the same time. Signs of depression may come in many different ways. The person may feel helpless or sad continually. Or feels empty for no particular reason. Along with these feelings probably comes a sudden loss of interest in everyday activities or even the loss of pleasure in things the used to enjoy. Hobbies for example. Or sports. In fact, depressed people tend to avoid pleasure instead of seeking it.
A disturbed sleep pattern is another of those significant signs of depression. Observe if they feel more fatigues than usual even though they sleep more hours than ever before. With this disturbed sleep pattern probably comes finding it hard to concentrate and a lack of strength to make decisions.
Here is another pointer: people who are suffering depression are (or are becoming!) more irritable. Excessive crying is another clue. If someone shows a number of these signs of depression for a period of 2 weeks or more, then they should call their doctor and talk to him. If they don't want to, it's up to you to make that call and see the person actually go visit the doctor. If you have to, ask some close friends to help you.
You can wake up with the flu, you can not wake up with depression. Depression builds up. And therefore the signs of depression come on gradually. But even in the beginning stages of depression, you'll notice that the depressed person is not the man or woman you used to know. All small and minor signs of depression usually add up to a pretty clear and probably not so pretty picture.
